Fisheries graduate students enroll in courses and conduct research across a broad spectrum of fisheries-related subjects. The program excels in quantitative fisheries science, fisheries management and human dimensions, as well as biological and ecological studies. While primarily located in Juneau or Fairbanks, most classes are broadcast via video to various sites across Alaska.
At each campus, students pursue diverse research projects in both marine and freshwater environments. These locations boast state-of-the-art lab facilities, proximity to unspoiled natural habitats and thriving fisheries, and robust partnerships with local communities, tribal organizations, government agencies, and stakeholders in commercial, recreational, and subsistence fishing sectors.
The majority of students receive research assistant positions during part or all of their studies. Collaborative partners like NOAA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Alaska Fish and Game contribute to research initiatives and frequently hire program graduates.
