At SAFS, you acquire expertise to push forward the field of fisheries and aquatic sciences. You'll complete your studies fully prepared for professional opportunities. The program teaches you to: conceive, express, and execute innovative research tackling key questions in your chosen specialty, share scientific knowledge clearly with fellow researchers and synthesize interdisciplinary understanding, build leadership capabilities through guiding, counseling, and teaching less experienced peers.
To obtain a PhD from SAFS, students must complete at least 90 quarter credits within 3-10 years, including a dissertation. With approval from both the supervisory committee and SAFS Student Services, up to 30 quarter credits from a qualifying master's program may count toward doctoral requirements. Core SAFS coursework mandated upon PhD admission must be completed if the student's master's degree came from another institution or was earned under different SAFS requirements.

Qualification Requirements
A minimum 3.0 GPA is required for the most recent 60 semester (90quarter) credits of study. GRE General exam is NOT required. GRE subject test is NOT required.
Incoming students who have not already earned a M.S. degree will initially be admitted into our M.S. program. Students can subsequently transfer to the Ph.D. program. For that reason, prospective students who do not have a master's should apply to the M.S. program.

The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
