The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UAH is dedicated to cultivating exceptional students by providing training, mentorship, and support to help them achieve their highest potential as scientists and emerging leaders in both scientific fields and broader society. This program signifies comprehensive mastery of core Physics disciplines along with specialized knowledge in areas like astrophysics or optics.
Students can complete the course-based track in as little as 18 months, while the thesis track typically takes approximately 2 years. For working professionals seeking advanced expertise, our thesis program features an Optics and Photonics Curriculum specifically designed to meet their educational needs.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from an approved institution.
To qualify for unconditional admission, applicants must satisfy the following minimum criteria:
1. Have a minimum grade-point average of B (3.0) on the undergraduate record, and
2. Have a minimum total score of 300 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and a minimum score of 3.0 on the analytical writing portion. For the English, Nursing, and Public Affairs programs, applicants must have a minimum total score of 410 on the MAT.
In order to be considered for admission to degree programs with no additional English language training required, applicants must meet the following minimums on the TOEFL or IELTS.
TOEFL (iBT): all sub-scores greater than or equal to 18 OR
IELTS: all sub-scores greater than or equal to 6.0
