The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides students with diverse program options within a unified departmental framework. Over time, the Department has adapted to incorporate expanding technical expertise and its application to socially relevant challenges.
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a General concentration is designed for students seeking the degree without specializing in structural, environmental, or transportation engineering.
Engineering design serves as a fundamental component of civil engineering practice, and consequently, UAH students engage with the design process throughout their academic journey. As engineering design involves applying basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering principles to achieve specific goals, the faculty integrate design elements into both engineering science courses and traditional civil engineering design classes. This approach familiarizes civil engineering students with design concepts and methodologies early in their education. Within the curriculum structure, courses focusing on problem-solving techniques come before those with substantial design content, which in turn precede the main design courses. All courses containing engineering design components contribute to the department's capstone design sequence, Civil Engineering Projects I and II (CE 498 and 499). This progressive development of design capabilities, culminating in the intensive capstone experience, prepares students for professional civil engineering practice.
