The German major program consists of 36 credit hours covering language proficiency, cultural studies, literary analysis, and practical applications of German. Students are highly recommended to participate in study abroad programs and must fulfill a German-language internship requirement, which can be completed either in the U.S. or internationally. Credit may be awarded for language courses completed at the Institute for Intercultural Communication in Düsseldorf, Germany, through UAH's established partnership. Additionally, German majors must select a secondary field of study as a minor, with the option to pursue a double major or dual degree program.
The German minor curriculum involves 24 credit hours dedicated to mastering core language competencies: reading comprehension, written expression, auditory understanding, and verbal communication.
Detailed degree requirements, including Charger Foundations coursework, can be found in the World Languages and Cultures section of the UAH catalog. Students with existing German proficiency may place into advanced courses through testing, potentially earning up to 6 credit hours (without grade points) toward their major or minor requirements.
The Department of World Languages and Cultures provides a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages with concentration options in French, German, Russian, or Spanish. Additional pathways include Foreign Language and International Trade specialization or teacher certification. While Arabic and Japanese aren't available as majors or minors, they fulfill BA language requirements and serve as elective options. Certificate programs are offered in the four primary languages and may include Arabic and Japanese based on current course availability.
