The English major within the Bachelor of Arts program offers adaptable coursework that equips students for advanced studies in English or careers in fields like law, healthcare, ministry, advertising, media, technical writing, and library sciences.
Through this program, students cultivate skills in interpreting texts—especially literary works—and composing analytical essays about literature and its historical development. The curriculum focuses on five key learning outcomes:
Students will master detailed analysis of various literary forms (including poetry, novels, plays, and films),
Students will gain broad familiarity with significant eras, movements, and writers in British and American literature,
Students will acquire practical understanding of literary terminology,
Students will learn to examine literature within its cultural framework,
Students will develop proficiency in finding, interpreting, and utilizing literary criticism and research, and
Students will refine their ability to craft well-structured, evidence-based literary analysis with clear, coherent, and stylistically effective writing.
International freshman applicants must be high school graduates (students that have the equivalent of a diploma in the United States).
English proficiency is measured through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of at least 550 on the paper based exam or 77 on the internet based TOEFL is required. USC also accepts the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the PTE Academic Test. Students must score at least a 6.5 on the IELTS, or at least a 53 on the PTE.
