Genetic counselors are highly sought-after healthcare specialists who merge their love for science with a desire to support others, offering specialized knowledge in diverse medical and industrial fields. This program equips you to earn board certification as a genetic counselor.

To excel in this role, you must master medical genetics and develop psychosocial skills to guide patients and families effectively. Your coursework covers core genetic counseling principles, in-depth medical genetics, and therapeutic communication techniques. You'll gain hands-on experience through distinctive clinical placements in pediatric, prenatal, oncology, and various specialty clinics, alongside research and laboratory genetic counseling opportunities. The program culminates with a Plan II project, requiring you to create and execute an original research initiative related to genetic counseling. At UAB, our extensive facilities provide numerous choices for both local and external clinical rotations and laboratory work.
