The Department of Art and Art History provides an MFA program enabling students to focus on various artistic fields while developing compelling creative works as they train to become professional visual artists and instructors. Established in 1972, the program has propelled countless artists into successful creative professions worldwide. Intentionally small class sizes ensure each student receives individual studio space and personalized faculty mentorship. The MFA curriculum demands 60 credit hours across graduate studio courses, seminars, art history studies, critiques, and electives, with all requirements to be fulfilled within a six-year timeframe. Throughout their studies, graduate students deliver public presentations and showcase their work, concluding with a written thesis and final exhibition.
Main studio facilities occupy Woods Quad, while Sculpture and Ceramics operate from the Bureau of Mines complex. Garland Hall houses the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, which hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions and actively collects modern works on paper and photography. Woods Hall's Sella-Granata Art Gallery features a dynamic exhibition calendar highlighting student creations and other academically oriented displays.
