The Master of Fine Arts in Animation stands as the flagship graduate program at DePaul, tailored for dedicated students pursuing animation as their primary career path. This terminal degree in the field welcomes applicants with bachelor's degrees in Animation, Film, Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, and related visual arts disciplines.
DePaul's MFA in Animation follows a unique year-long project framework where students receive intensive faculty guidance. In the initial year, participants primarily focus on completing a film under the direct supervision of either Animation MFA Co-Chair - renowned artists Amy Lockhart or Jacob Ciocci. Students also select faculty mentors from our extensive full-time animation staff for ongoing project consultations. The program fosters individual artistic development while challenging students to expand both their technical skills and the creative boundaries of animation.
The second year shifts focus to the MFA Thesis Project, with students collaborating closely with a Co-Chair and forming a Thesis Committee for continuous evaluation. Following a cohort-based approach, candidates progress through the program alongside their peers. The curriculum provides comprehensive instruction in animation history, critical theory, and essential artistic foundations vital for professional animators.
