The Individual Studies Master (ISM) Program enables exceptional, driven candidates to design tailored master's degree programs unavailable through CWU's standard offerings. These customized programs can blend multiple disciplines or explore specialized topics, but students may only submit proposals when existing graduate programs cannot be modified through Individual Studies 596 courses to fulfill their professional goals. Program approval hinges on:

Demonstrated applicant qualifications and proven capacity to successfully complete the proposed ISM
Availability of enough relevant graduate-level courses at the university
Commitment from an adequate number of qualified faculty to mentor the student
Access to necessary academic and creative resources
CWU will approve ISM programs solely in areas where the dean of School of Graduate Studies and Research and the Graduate Council's Academic Standards Committee (ASC) confirm sufficient faculty expertise and institutional resources exist.
