The Department provides PhD programs in Literature, featuring a dedicated concentration in Renaissance Studies, along with Composition and Rhetoric.
Faculty members guide graduate students through every phase of their academic journey, from initial coursework to teaching roles, examinations, and dissertation completion.
Graduate students in our program benefit from both immersive learning experiences and structured teaching opportunities with ongoing support. First-year literature students typically co-teach with faculty, facilitating discussions for larger lecture courses. Second-year students gain hands-on experience by instructing composition classes. Advanced PhD candidates may later teach literature surveys or develop their own specialized courses.

Qualification Requirements
For the PhD program, successful applicants normally have a GPA of 3.5 or better in master's or equivalent graduate work.
Each international applicant must hold the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution to be eligible for graduate admission. While individual departments may have more stringent requirements, bachelor degrees from Bologna Accord certified institutions are considered to meet this criterion. We do also consider Indian three-year degrees to be equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree.
TOEFL : The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT).
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5.
