Our PhD program offers comprehensive, cross-disciplinary training for aspiring teacher-scholars in a collaborative setting. Working closely with faculty advisors, students create personalized study plans that combine departmental seminars in English, American, and Anglophone literatures along with literary and cultural theory. These can be enhanced with independent research and courses from other departments or nearby universities. Advanced certification options include Cultural Studies, Art and Philosophy, Disability Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric. Following coursework, candidates must successfully complete qualifying exams demonstrating mastery of two literary historical periods and a specialized topic before beginning dissertation work. Graduates typically leave with teaching experience both in and beyond their focus areas, along with professional accomplishments including conference presentations and publications. Our alumni hold positions at academic institutions across the globe.
