Rooted in both time-honored practices and bold creative exploration, drawing serves as the cornerstone for numerous art disciplines while standing strong as an independent expressive medium. The University of Alabama's drawing curriculum offers students a demanding educational journey that embraces the full range of artistic potential.
Our program introduces foundational studies through fresh perspectives on formal and perceptual drawing, progressing to intermediate coursework where learners harmonize technical precision with investigations into materials, techniques, thematic content, and theoretical frameworks. Upper-level drawing students are challenged to push the medium's boundaries, examining both conventional two-dimensional expressions and innovative applications across surfaces, spatial dimensions, and temporal elements. Throughout all program levels, students examine historical influences and current artistic movements to develop their perceptual awareness, conceptual thinking, and critical analysis skills as emerging artists.
