The Department provides graduate programs culminating in M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. Our interdisciplinary approach equips graduates to become autonomous researchers, offering comprehensive training that balances broad knowledge with specialized expertise while emphasizing strong communication abilities.
Through a partnership with the Physics Department, we provide a chemical physics specialization within our chemistry Ph.D. program. We encourage cross-disciplinary learning via ongoing collaborations with The Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science, Institute for Biomedical Engineering Research, Center for Environmental Studies, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and the Integrated Bioscience program.
The University of Akron's Chemistry program ranks among the institution's premier graduate offerings, maintaining strong ties with Polymer Science, Engineering, and Biology departments. Our program typically hosts 40-60 graduate students along with postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists from across the globe. Our faculty includes 13 tenured and tenure-track professors, supplemented by numerous adjunct faculty from other departments and external institutions who actively participate in graduate-level instruction.
Students can pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry or choose between Thesis and Non-Thesis options for their M.S. degree. Our graduate education aims to cultivate independent research capabilities while providing access to sophisticated instrumentation and coursework designed to enhance professional communication skills.
