Public interest in animal behavior studies has grown significantly, driven by zoos' focus on behavioral biology and widespread media coverage of animal behavior and sociobiology topics. The Animal Behavior Concentration within the Interdisciplinary Studies major provides comprehensive training in the various methodologies used to examine behavioral biology. This curriculum strategically blends biology and psychology courses to build a strong knowledge base. Students must also undertake either an independent research project or internship to gain hands-on research experience.
Graduates of this program may find employment opportunities at zoos, aquariums, and nature preserves. They also acquire the specialized expertise needed for careers as science writers focusing on animal behavior. Those planning to pursue graduate studies should note that additional coursework in biology or psychology will be required. Currently, most program participants are simultaneously pursuing degrees in either Biology or Psychology.
Prospective students interested in the Animal Behavior Concentration should consult with a program advisor before selecting Interdisciplinary Studies as their major.
