Historic Preservation plays a vital role in safeguarding our cultural legacy while influencing the development of future communities and urban spaces. Jefferson's MS in Historic Preservation (MSHP) equips graduates with the skills to conserve historical structures and locations, creatively adapting them to meet contemporary and future requirements. As this field spans multiple disciplines, the program welcomes applicants from various academic and professional backgrounds. Participants can opt for either the Research & Documentation or Preservation Design track, with opportunities to focus on complementary specialties from the College of Architecture and the Built Environment's graduate programs, such as Sustainable Design, Geographic Information Systems, Architectural History, Real Estate Development, and Urban Design. The flexible curriculum enables students to pursue subjects aligned with their passions and career aspirations
Earning a master's in Historic Preservation opens doors to diverse professional paths. Alumni from Jefferson work as preservation architects, architectural conservators, architectural historians, and preservation planners across private firms, non-profits, and government institutions. MSHP graduates continuing to Jefferson's PhD in Architecture & Design Research program may transfer up to 18 credits, potentially completing their doctoral studies in three years rather than the standard four-year duration.
