Students determine their academic path, including study programs, course selections, and thesis subjects, by collaborating with their graduate advisor and relevant faculty members, considering their academic background, interests, and goals.
Course offerings. The sociology curriculum features specialized coursework in diverse fields such as family studies, criminology and deviance, educational sociology, racial and social inequality, population studies and migration, medical sociology, and gerontology. Mandatory courses consist of SOC 5101 (1 credit hour), SOC 5303, SOC 5308, SOC 5334, and SOC 5394. Students may allocate six of the 36 required credit hours to a minor from another department, subject to approval by the Sociology Graduate Committee. Instead of a foreign language requirement, all students must demonstrate competency in computer-based data analysis. Graduate-level credit requires a minimum grade of B.
