The Sociology Department within the College of Arts and Sciences provides a terminal master's program designed to be finished within three years. During the 1990s, the department shifted its focus to global issues and their relationship with national trends. This positions us at the forefront of sociological studies and aligns with the university's goal of increasing global relevance. Our department places strong emphasis on inequality, with faculty specializing in diverse fields such as environmental studies, gender issues, public health, international development, and racial justice. We employ a wide range of methodological approaches, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Ultimately, our mission is to equip students with the tools to apply top-tier methodologies to today's most critical research challenges. The department provides both M.A. and Ph.D. programs, with our doctoral program holding national recognition due to our graduates' successful placements in various institutions—from research universities and prestigious liberal arts colleges to teaching-focused schools and international organizations. Our alumni have recently secured positions at: University of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, SUNY-Brockport, California State University-Bakersfield, University of Memphis, University of Northern Colorado, New York University (Postdoctoral Role), University of Stockholm (Postdoctoral Role), Yale University (Research Scientist), and the United Nations Statistics Division.
