To earn a Master of Arts degree, students in the M.A. academic preparatory program must complete a minimum of 36 graduate credit hours. At least 24 of these hours must be completed within Texas Tech's History Department, consisting of 12 advanced (5000-level) credits in one of three specialization regions (United States, Europe, or World History) plus 12 elective graduate credits. Among these electives, students must select 6 credits from historical fields outside their primary geographic focus.

Qualification Requirements

A student qualifying for admission to the Graduate School may gain admission to the department's Master's program by meeting the following standards:
Possession of a bachelor's degree in history or at least 24 hours of undergraduate history or sufficient courses in related disciplines to indicate a background in the general area of humanistic studies.
An overall grade-point average on undergraduate work of 3.00.
At least 18 hours of undergraduate history with grades of B or above.
An overall grade-point average in undergraduate coursework of 2.50
Students admitted conditionally must maintain at least a 3.25 grade-point average in the first full semester (9 hours) of graduate coursework in history.
TOEFL - The minimum TOEFL score required is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version).
IELTS - The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version
