The Plant and Soil Science Ph.D. program mandates 60 graduate credit hours post-bachelor's degree plus 12 dissertation credits, summing to 72 total hours. Students can specialize in areas like crop protection, crop science, fibers and biopolymers, horticulture, or soil science, with their specialization selected during preliminary exams. Should admission exams identify gaps in foundational knowledge, the graduate faculty may assign additional preparatory coursework. The advisory committee guides language prerequisites and foundational science requirements. Ph.D. candidates must pass comprehensive written and oral exams administered by their graduate committee, assessing their specialization expertise, supporting field knowledge, scientific methodology comprehension, and scholarly communication skills.
