Earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology generally involves 5-6 years of dedicated study, which includes a mandatory APA-accredited internship lasting one year. This clinical psychology program exclusively accepts candidates pursuing doctoral studies. While working toward their doctorate, students typically obtain a master's degree related to their thesis work (unless they've previously earned an equivalent thesis-based master's elsewhere). The program doesn't offer standalone master's degree admission for clinical psychology. For a psychology master's degree, students must complete at least 36 credit hours of prescribed coursework at Texas Tech, along with other program requirements such as thesis research and specific statistics classes. Doctoral psychology programs show variation in total credit requirements due to differences between programs, student specialization areas, diverse academic preparation, and other practical considerations. Psychology doctoral candidates at Texas Tech usually complete around 90-120 credit hours of graduate coursework before earning their degree. Additional doctoral program requirements must also be fulfilled before degree conferral.
