The Department of Mechanical Engineering serves as a vital resource for the Whitacre College of Engineering, Texas Tech University, the state of Texas, and the entire country. Based on ASEE statistics, the Department ranks among the top 25 institutions for awarding B.S.M.E. degrees (out of 274 reporting schools). Presently, 34 distinguished faculty members with diverse expertise drive the Department's commitment to outstanding research and education. Numerous professors hold fellowship status in their professional societies and have earned multiple teaching and research honors. The Department provides fully accredited B.S.M.E., M.S.M.E., and Ph.D. programs, with a robust enrollment of 567 undergraduates and 136 graduate students (47 pursuing master's degrees and 89 doctoral candidates). Established in 1925 alongside Texas Tech University's founding, the Department awarded its first six B.S.M.E. degrees in 1929. Graduate studies expanded with the M.S. program's launch in 1959 and the Ph.D. program's introduction in 1965. The Department consistently attracts top-tier students who earn prestigious awards, and its graduates secure positions across industries, academic institutions, and national laboratories—primarily within Texas but throughout the United States.
