The English Department is dedicated to enhancing students' reading and writing capabilities, deepening their appreciation of modern discourse and literary traditions, and refining their creative and analytical skills through outstanding research, instruction, and service. Our faculty focuses on both interpreting and creating texts while pioneering scholarship and pedagogy that bridges literature, linguistics, creative writing, composition, rhetoric, and technical communication. Students will cultivate critical thinking about literature, language, culture, and technology while mastering diverse, sophisticated, and ethically grounded forms of oral and written expression.
The English program comprises 120 semester credit hours, covering core curriculum, major requirements, and a minor. Students pursuing an English major must select a specialization in literature and language, creative writing, or the secondary education teaching certificate. A maximum of 9 advanced transfer credits in English can be applied toward the major. The creative writing concentration caters to students aspiring to craft fiction, nonfiction, or poetry under the mentorship of practicing writers. This track emphasizes literary studies, enabling students to explore and apply narrative techniques across genres. Beyond writing and literary exploration, this specialization is ideal for those considering careers in college-level creative writing instruction, graduate studies in literature or creative writing, or preparation for professional programs like law and business.
