English serves as a comprehensive major or minor that cultivates essential skills historically valued in society: reading with deep understanding and analytical insight, communicating precisely through speech and writing, comprehending complex concepts and reasoning systematically, conducting research and structuring information, forming ethical perspectives within a humanistic context, and developing an appreciation for literature and creative arts.
At the heart of the English major lie four foundational upper-division course categories: studies in literary history, explorations of literary genres, intensive seminar discussions, and writing-focused classes. Masterpiece courses count toward the minor and can fulfill General Education criteria. Additionally, the department provides instruction in mythology and folklore, research methodologies, film studies, and women's studies.
For those pursuing teaching credentials, the Subject Matter Program includes various prerequisite courses and specialized requirements, some extending beyond the English Department's offerings.
