The Department of Geography provides dynamic ways to study our planet and its diverse environments through hands-on fieldwork, classroom learning, and lab research. Students collaborate with professors to examine the complex interactions between physical, biological, chemical, cultural, economic, political, and social forces that shape our earth-ocean-atmosphere system.
Geography alumni emerge as influential professionals in government organizations, resource-focused industries, spatial data firms, and social service sectors. Career paths also include private consulting, research and development enterprises, and educational institutions at all levels.
A completed bachelor's degree is required for admission. While many candidates hold geography degrees, various academic backgrounds are suitable based on individual focus areas. The M.S. program (32 thesis credits or 36 non-thesis credits) typically spans four full-time semesters. Graduate students gain essential geographical expertise to pursue advanced doctoral studies or professional roles in research, teaching, government, corporate sectors, and other geography-related fields.

You are an international graduate applicant if you:
are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States (or applicant for permanent residency)
AND
you have not graduated from a Texas high school after three years in residence in Texas
AND
hold a bachelor’s or professional degree (or equivalent)
English proficiency can also be demonstrated by:
Minimum TOEFL i-BT score of 80 (in person or Home Edition) from a test date within two years (Texas A&M University does not accept the MyBest TOEFL score), or
Minimum TOEFL Essentials score of 8.5, or
Minimum IELTS Academic test score of 6.0 overall band (Texas A&M University does not accept the IELTS General test), or
GRE Verbal Reasoning score of at least 146 (subject to departmental approval), or
