Oceanography graduate programs with a thesis component are available for both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. These programs aim to equip students with a thorough grounding in oceanographic principles, prioritizing effective communication and data gathering/analysis skills. A substantial portion of each program involves conducting research and completing a thesis.
Oceanography represents a multidisciplinary scientific field centered on studying oceans, their contents, and boundaries. Unlike conventional graduate programs that encourage increasing specialization, oceanography welcomes graduates from specialized disciplines like biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, or engineering, first expanding their knowledge through fundamental coursework. This foundational curriculum encompasses the four oceanographic specialties—biological, chemical, geological/geophysical, and physical oceanography—along with a seminar on current scientific developments. Following this interdisciplinary introduction, students concentrate on their chosen research area to explore cutting-edge scientific frontiers. The Ph.D. program specifically prepares candidates with in-depth expertise in their specialization and research methodologies. It requires 96 credit hours of combined study and research for students entering with a Bachelor's degree, or 64 credit hours for those holding a thesis-based M.S. in a related discipline.
