The Department of History provides two doctoral tracks: a 64-credit program for candidates entering with an MA and a 96-credit program for those starting with a BA. The extended program includes earning an MA along the way. Graduate students choose a primary historical focus, a secondary historical concentration, and an interdisciplinary field from another TAMU department. Detailed program guidelines are available in the Graduate Program Brochure. The 64-credit PhD combines 30-46 credits of classes with 18-34 research credits. Mandatory coursework includes 6 credits in an external minor, 6 in a historical minor, and 18 in a historical major. A minimum of 18 research credits is required, with most doctoral candidates allocating remaining credits to research (History 691). Before preliminary exams, students must demonstrate proficiency in one or two foreign languages, depending on their specialization.
