The Department of History of Science stands as a premier global institution for training future historians of science, offering a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for both academic teaching and advanced research.
Our distinctive, cross-disciplinary approach moves beyond traditional Euro-centric viewpoints to incorporate global perspectives, including insights from Chinese, African, Latin American, and indigenous historical traditions.
Students have the opportunity to work with our renowned Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, among the most extensive and valuable university-held collections worldwide. These artifacts span diverse historical eras and scientific fields, encompassing astronomy, navigation, timekeeping, cartography, earth sciences, computation, physics, life sciences, medical practice, psychology, electrical studies, and information technology.
Individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application Deadline: December 1.
