The Texas A&M School of Medicine provides a dual-degree program that awards both MD and PhD qualifications. This initiative aims to equip dedicated medical students with research expertise for careers in academic medicine.

The curriculum seamlessly combines medical and doctoral studies. Candidates can pursue their PhD through the School of Medicine's Medical Sciences Program or other Texas A&M biomedical-related doctoral programs. Even unconventional fields like political science or architecture may qualify if the research connects to biomedical applications.

Through our collaboration with Houston Methodist Hospital, students gain exceptional clinical experience and patient-focused research possibilities. This approach cultivates physician-scientists who can effectively bridge clinical practice with fundamental biomedical research, offering fresh perspectives on human diseases.

Completing the MD/PhD program generally takes seven to eight years. Participants begin during summer semester, five weeks before medical school orientation. Mandatory enrollment in MSCI 620/920 (The Scientific Basis of Medicine) and weekly research seminar attendance helps students select their graduate specialization while enhancing analytical abilities and fostering collaboration among peers and faculty with MD/PhD backgrounds.
