The Coastal Environmental Science and Society program offers a Bachelor of Science degree centered on studying natural environmental systems (including physical, chemical, and geological processes) alongside human dimensions (such as policy, governance, economics, and legal frameworks) concerning ocean and coastal resource utilization and ecosystem preservation. This interdisciplinary program builds core competencies in oceanography, geology, chemistry, biology, and physics while incorporating studies in economic systems, policy analysis, and resource management. The coursework specifically addresses how resource utilization affects both society and the environment, examining critical areas like environmental contamination, sustainable practices, biodiversity conservation, fisheries and aquaculture operations, hydrocarbon exploration, coastal habitats (including wetlands), and climate change impacts. Both public and private sectors increasingly seek professionals who can integrate scientific knowledge into planning, management, and policy formulation. Graduates emerge with strong scientific training, positioning them perfectly for careers bridging governmental and corporate sectors in marine environments. Through strategic elective selections, students also gain qualifications to pursue advanced degrees in marine policy, environmental studies, ocean sciences, or related fields.
