Master’s coursework exposes students to the breadth of anthropology. The degree can be earned concurrently with a Certificate of Advanced Study or a second master’s degree, or earned in advance of more narrowly defined scholarly studies and doctoral research topics. Students must take at least five core courses, including a two-course sequence within their subdiscipline, ( ANT 611 - ANT 711 for cultural students; and ANT 641 - ANT 741 for archaeology students) and at least three core courses in other subdisciplines, followed by a qualifying exam in their subdiscipline: either the History of Anthropological Theory and Ethnology OR Archaeological Method and Theory. Students who do not continue beyond the master’s level are required to submit a master’s paper, which is a significant piece of work on a subject of the student’s choosing, and approved by the advisor.
English Proficiency
If your native language is not English, you may be required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS test (International English Language Testing Service). See the program requirements list for your program (located in the application) for more information. Syracuse University is also home to the English Language Institute, which offers English training to those at all levels of proficiency, including graduate.
Academic Credentials
You will need to submit one copy of records for all previous post-secondary education. You can do this by contacting the Registrar’s Office of each higher education institution that you have attended, and asking to have one copy of your transcript(s) sent to Syracuse University. All offers of admission from Syracuse University are conditional, pending the receipt of these official academic credentials. Your academic credentials confirm that you have been awarded a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
Funding Requirements
The U.S. government requires international students to demonstrate sufficient funding for at least the first year of graduate study. Once you’ve done this, we can issue the visa eligibility document that you’ll need in order to have your student visa authorized.

Various scholarships, fellowships and instructional associate positions are awarded to incoming Newhouse students to help offset the cost of attendance. Since Newhouse does have limited funding to offer, the majority of these awards are partial and may only be applicable for the academic year (excluding the summer sessions). It is also a competitive process, and all awards are merit-based.
In addition, U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for need-based loans issued by the government and facilitated through Syracuse University’s Financial Aid Office. Most students can fulfill their calculated financial aid need through these loan programs.
