At Syracuse University's Department of Religion, graduate students craft distinctive, innovative, and demanding academic paths that equally prioritize research and instruction.

Religious studies at Syracuse approach the concept of religion as a thought-provoking intellectual challenge rather than merely as a descriptive, institutional, or experiential classification. The Department bases its curriculum on two core principles:

religious scholarship must span multiple disciplines, and
religious scholarship must examine both the tangible, written, historical, and cultural aspects of faiths along with the theoretical frameworks used to understand them.
