Temple University's Religion Department was established soon after the Supreme Court endorsed the academic study of religion (distinct from religious practice) in public education. Departing from conventional seminary approaches focused on church history and theology, Temple's program embraced a diverse, interdisciplinary examination of worldwide religious traditions. This unique approach provides exceptional breadth and cross-cultural richness. Our department has consistently drawn international students, with alumni now teaching at universities across North America and in countries like Germany, Japan, Korea, and Malaysia. The PhD in Religion program at Temple's College of Liberal Arts offers rigorous exploration of global religious traditions through multiple advanced methodologies. Students critically analyze major belief systems using textual/historical research, philosophical/hermeneutical approaches, and sociocultural analysis. The program culminates in original dissertation research that makes meaningful contributions to religious scholarship, presented and defended by candidates.
