This research field focuses on colloidal interactions within paper production, specifically examining how fibers, fine particles, polymer additives, and electrolytes interact during stock preparation and sheet formation. Investigations span two main areas: basic colloidal particle dynamics and paper stock performance on manufacturing equipment. For industrial-scale studies, researchers utilize the pilot plant resources at Walters Hall. Ongoing projects explore alternative pulping methods like non-sulfur and biopulping, byproduct recovery of chemicals and energy, impacts of wet pressing and drying techniques on paper quality, processing tropical hardwoods, and digital modeling for process optimization. These studies are supported by a fully equipped pilot mill featuring dual paper machines, a pressurized refiner, and comprehensive ancillary systems.
