When policies and practices negatively impact communities, sociologists work to analyze and transform the underlying social factors—particularly affecting people of color, immigrant populations, low-income families, women, young people, and LGBTQ+ communities. As a sociology student, you can contribute to this transformative work.
Our experiential curriculum explores interpersonal relationships and societal influences on individual success or hardship. By cultivating critical thinking about human behavior, systemic inequities, and organizational frameworks, you'll gain problem-solving abilities, cultural competency, and global perspectives.
Our program prepares students to:
Apply foundational and modern sociological theories to study human relationships and social systems, Acquire tools to promote equity and tackle societal challenges like criminal justice issues, prejudice, and economic disparity, Master various sociological research techniques, Critically evaluate academic studies to become informed interpreters of social data, Enhance written and verbal communication abilities.
The sociology program emphasizes analyzing human behavior and social institutions. You'll investigate societal organization, power dynamics, interpersonal relationships, along with equity and justice principles. The curriculum also teaches comprehensive research methods—from topic selection and study design to data collection, analysis, and presentation.
Upperclass students can participate in field practicums working with underserved communities. Our faculty network facilitates internships across Boston-area institutions like judicial systems, youth programs, educational facilities, legal practices, healthcare organizations, crisis intervention services, social agencies, and housing support centers.
