The Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies program, specializing in history, prepares students for New York State certification to teach social studies in grades 7-12, with an additional option to extend certification to grades 5-6. Offered jointly by the University's History Department and Distributed Teacher and Leader Education program, this curriculum is tailored for individuals with minimal or no prior educational coursework or classroom teaching background.

Qualification Requirements

An undergraduate degree in history or one of the social sciences (excluding psychology, linguistics, criminal justice and communications) with an 18-credit history minor.
A minimum GPA of 3.00 in your overall bachelor's degree program and in the content field.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE, general test, not subject test) taken within the last five years. Successful applicants generally have verbal scores in the 50-80th percentiles, writing scores in the 40-80th percentiles, and quantitative scores in the in the 20-60th percentiles.
One year of college-level study of a foreign language with a grade of C or better (this may include American Sign Language).
