The Mathematics Department within the College of Arts and Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in an M.A. in Mathematics (with a Secondary Teacher track), a standard M.A. in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics. National assessments, including U.S. News and World Report's graduate school rankings, consistently place the department's Ph.D. program within the country's top 20, with certain specialties like Geometry ranking among the top five. Collaborative partnerships with the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and the Institute for Mathematical Sciences significantly strengthen the department's research and educational objectives. Although these institutes operate independently, their faculty occasionally teach courses or advise students through the department. Renowned globally, the Mathematics Ph.D. program maintains rigorous admissions standards, equipping students for academic careers in research and teaching while also providing skills applicable to finance, technology, and other sectors. Ph.D. candidates may additionally apply for the Professional Option MA degree, which alone prepares graduates for various professional paths, including community college instruction.
