Geology is the scientific study of Earth's and other planets' physical and chemical properties, along with the processes that have shaped these characteristics throughout history. The Bachelor of Science program offers customizable options, enabling students to select electives in environmental geoscience, planetary studies, geophysics, and geochemistry. This flexibility helps undergraduates tailor their degree to align with personal interests and professional aspirations by choosing 15 credits of advanced science and math courses from both geoscience and other disciplines. The program is designed to thoroughly prepare graduates for postgraduate studies or careers in environmental consulting, government agencies, and related fields.
The Geosciences Department provides two undergraduate tracks: a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Bachelor of Arts in Earth and Space Sciences. The B.S. in Geology has specific course prerequisites outlined below, while B.A. requirements can be found in the Approved Majors, Minors, and Programs section. Upon declaring a major, students receive a faculty advisor to guide course selection and academic progress. Regular consultation with advisors is encouraged to ensure proper course sequencing. Given the significant societal role of scientists, students are advised to maintain a well-rounded education by including arts, humanities, and social sciences in their studies.
