The Ecosystems and Human Impact bachelor's program, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree, equips students with the tools to analyze and tackle the intricate relationship between human societies and natural systems. This interdisciplinary major blends ecological, biological, genetic, anthropological, and geographical approaches with economic, ethical, and policy frameworks from a worldwide viewpoint. Graduates gain qualifications for careers across government, business, and nonprofit organizations focused on challenges like habitat preservation, ecological rehabilitation, species protection, and sustainable resource development. The program also serves as excellent preparation for advanced studies in disciplines ranging from anthropology and geography to environmental science and biological sciences.
Building upon foundational sustainability coursework, students complete specialized classes during their upper-division years. A highlight includes the optional Madagascar study abroad program at Ranomafana, offering immersive training in field biology, ecological studies, primate research, and cultural anthropology. Participants engage in coursework and original research projects that enhance knowledge of Ranomafana National Park and its connections to local communities. Additional hands-on learning opportunities include domestic internships, research projects, and field courses. The accompanying minor allows students from other disciplines to systematically explore human-environment interactions through complementary coursework.
