The Master of Science in Symbolic Systems is a research-focused program designed to facilitate diverse projects mentored by Stanford faculty. Our objective is to equip students with the terminology, conceptual foundations, and technical competencies needed to engage in modern interdisciplinary research, particularly investigations concerning language, information, and intelligence—both biological and artificial. Ideal candidates demonstrate robust cross-disciplinary research ambitions that integrate expertise from at least two of our affiliated fields: computer science, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, mathematics, statistics, communication, and education.
Applicants from colleges and universities of recognized standing who hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent are eligible to be considered for admission for graduate study. English Proficiency: TOEFL - Your minimum score must be 100 (internet based) OR 600 (paper based).
