Stanford's Philosophy graduate program ranks among the top globally by every standard. We enroll outstanding students, offer them extensive opportunities to learn from and consult with renowned scholars, and produce skilled philosophers prepared to vie for top positions in a competitive academic job market. Our program awards both MA and PhD degrees. Philosophy tackles challenging inquiries and explores foundational ideas, ranging from abstract concepts like truth, justice, value, and knowledge to more tangible concerns. The field studies historical thinkers' contributions while fostering the ability to reflect critically on our own thought processes. It promotes precise thinking and methodical evaluation of arguments while confronting intricate issues often neglected elsewhere. Cultivating philosophical thinking enables students to recognize and critically examine the underlying assumptions in common judgments, practices, and reasoning. At Stanford, we maintain that philosophy should be active and practical, confronting philosophical issues as they emerge in real-world contexts and across various academic disciplines. This approach is evident in our department's partnerships with numerous interdisciplinary programs such as Ethics in Society, Symbolic Systems, History and Philosophy of Science, Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Philosophy and Literature initiative.
