The Modern Europe program at Stanford educates students in every dimension of political, social, cultural, intellectual, diplomatic, and economic history across the continent and its former empires, spanning from the late 1700s to today. Over the past ten years, doctoral candidates have investigated diverse topics such as racial identity, political movements, gender studies, migration patterns, conflict and aid, warfare's societal effects, postcolonial transitions, and Cold War dynamics. Graduates from this program have obtained faculty positions at leading universities and liberal arts colleges, earned competitive global postdoctoral awards, and found success in non-academic careers. Professors provide foundational courses, specialized research classes, and personalized reading guidance. Additionally, all program members engage with various workshops and seminars covering both national European histories and Europe's worldwide influence in contemporary society.
