Mastery of advanced language skills is essential for academic achievement in East Asian studies. All incoming students must complete a diagnostic placement test in their chosen language during the fall semester registration period. These test results will be shared with each student's advisor. Furthermore, specific language proficiency milestones must be achieved before attempting the university oral examination. Doctoral candidates satisfy the language requirement by either earning a B+ or higher in designated language courses or proving comparable competence through the placement exam.
