The African history graduate program explores pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras across sub-Saharan Africa. This two-stage program begins with coursework in primary and secondary fields during years one through three, where students also develop dissertation proposals, fulfill language requirements, secure research funding, gain teaching experience, prepare for oral examinations, and draft their dissertation prospectuses. The subsequent phase, typically starting in year three, involves conducting original African fieldwork, fulfilling teaching obligations, and completing dissertation writing and defense.
