Established by trailblazing historians Philip Curtin and Jan Vansina, UW-Madison's African History program has consistently ranked among the world's top programs. The African Studies Program, one of the nation's select Title VI National Resource Centers for Africa, is among the many valuable campus assets supporting African history research. Under Emilie Songolo's leadership, the University Library boasts exceptional resources, featuring an expanding digital collection within the African Studies Collection. Wisconsin has educated over a hundred African historians, producing numerous field leaders, promising young academics, and a record number of Herskovits Prize recipients for outstanding African Studies publications.
Key areas of expertise encompass pre-colonial and contemporary East Africa, the African diaspora, colonial history, globalization, as well as the historical study of health, medicine, and science across the African continent.
