The American Religions program in Stanford's Religious Studies Department provides adaptable, customized graduate education, acknowledging students' diverse interests and methodological approaches. During their initial two years, candidates must complete 2 courses outside their specialization and study with 5 distinct Religious Studies faculty members. The PhD curriculum includes three years of coursework, then a qualifying exam in both the subfield and specialization area, culminating in dissertation writing. While completion times vary significantly, the majority of students spend at least six years. The department usually accepts three to four PhD candidates annually, maintaining approximately twenty-five enrolled students. A religious studies education develops versatile skills applicable to numerous professions such as legal practice, teaching, healthcare, media, public service, non-profit work, and ministry. Graduates pursue careers as social justice advocates, entertainment writers, inspirational presenters, and university educators.
