The Ph.D. program is designed mainly for those pursuing careers in research, innovation, or academia. For such roles, comprehensive knowledge in mathematics and engineering sciences, combined with focused specialization and research experience, forms the essential foundation. Nearly every professor in Stanford's Mechanical Engineering Department engages in design-related work. Some directly create and produce devices, while others investigate design methodologies, including collaborative design and group learning - a longstanding focus of our design program. We also build tools to support engineering product development across various scales and complexities. Our interpretation of "design" is intentionally broad, mirroring the diverse perspectives we foster within the Department. We maintain that deeper insight into societal needs, informed by social sciences, will enhance the practical significance of our chosen research areas.
