The Stanford Linguistics Department places significant emphasis on phonetics and phonology, particularly studying variation. Our studies combine sound system theories with broader linguistic elements (syntax, morphology) and language application (sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics), while exploring connections to adjacent disciplines (metrics, historical linguistics, language evolution). Our approach is theory-based yet data-intensive. We utilize diverse behavioral and computational techniques to examine sound systems cross-linguistically, revealing the cognitive mechanisms and representations fundamental to human language.
