Northwest Semitic Philology serves as an umbrella term encompassing diverse programs focused on analyzing texts in the languages and dialects of Northwest Semitic cultures (including Ugaritic, Phoenician-Punic, Transjordanian dialects, all Hebrew variants, and Aramaic dialects). The curriculum centers on mastering Classical Hebrew language and literature from both historical and descriptive perspectives. Building upon this foundation, students expand their understanding of related languages and dialects while cultivating expertise in their chosen specialization. Beyond linguistic studies, participants must demonstrate competence in an additional major Semitic language, along with knowledge of ancient Near Eastern history and archaeology (with special emphasis on Syria-Palestine).
