The Comparative Literature Ph.D. program focuses on equipping students with the necessary tools and guidance to undertake a rigorous yet fulfilling academic journey. Our resources extend beyond conventional coursework, library access, and financial aid to include a collaborative scholarly network within Comparative Literature, the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL), and numerous other departments and interdisciplinary initiatives. We also engage with the Stanford Humanities Center and its digital platform, ARCADE. With an intentionally limited cohort size, we foster close-knit intellectual exchanges. Stanford's Comparative Literature program emphasizes multilingual proficiency (minimum three languages), historical depth, and mastery of literary theory—both established and emerging—while remaining open to interdisciplinary perspectives beyond traditional literary scholarship.
